Family Businesses going gangbusters - how to survive and thrive in an ever changing marketplace

Jo Pennycuick is the founder of Redesign Group NZ – a multidisciplinary design practice offering an extensive range of services including spatial design, retail, food and beverage design, commercial office planning, graphic design and branding.  Jo began her career back in Auckland working for three years in two design practices before relocating to Christchurch and commencing her own start-up business focusing mainly on contract work.

The business proved very successful and the volume of work grew to enable Jo to employ her first employee in 2001.  From there the business quickly progressed into a national design company.  In 2006 Jo ventured offshore for business into China. At the same time the niche design market in New Zealand had diminished which drove the business to successfully look for further offshore work into growth markets such as the Middle East and India.

Jo has attended several New Zealand government led business delegations to the Middle East and India and has recently been nominated as the Chairperson for the Indian New Zealand Business Council.  She has close ties with the NZTE and is often in demand to consult with businesses on how to break into offshore markets.

Redesign Group is now located in four areas, Christchurch - New Zealand, New Delhi - India, Ho Chi Minh City - Vietnam and has associate offices in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dubai - Middle East.  Jo employs 23 staff and is increasing due to the demands of the business.  Redesign Group’s work also extends into Europe, USA, South East Asia and China.

With such diversity in cultures and clientele the work is challenging and exciting.  Jo has built her business into a strong client and staff driven company with a focus on high quality.
