Trucks transport 91% of New Zealand’s total freight that’s 236 million tonnes
Road transport is particularly important to regional New Zealand and the Export industries carrying 95% of export fruit, 86% of export wool, 85% of export dairy products, 65% of export logs and 35% of export meat. Collectively that’s nearly $21 billion a year in overseas earnings.
The road freight industry has taken the lead in promoting measures to improve road safety with the number of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles nearly halved since the mid 1990’s.
