The Chamber of Commerce is very concerned that the collection of the Commercial Accommodation Statistics by Stats New Zealand will be discontinued from the end of November 2019.

“This information is critical to the tourism and visitor industry providing information on guest night numbers, capacity and occupancy rates” said Wendy Smith.

“Although the survey does not collect home sharing data such as Air bnb, Bookabach and similar holiday rental information, it is an absolutely essential tool and must be maintained”.

This Commercial Accommodation information is the primary tool used for a wide range of strategic decision making including commercial investment, infrastructure development and long-term planning. The rationale for ceasing this and three other surveys is a lack of funding and Stats NZ state on their website that they are “no longer able to run based on present funding.”

The data for the Mackenzie, Timaru and Waimate Districts has been available and actively used for years. This will be a huge loss, as without this trend indicator commercial operators are left with no specific guest night accommodation data.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has written to Tourism Minister Hon Kelvin Davis to request his immediate involvement, recommending in-depth consultation with the industry and appropriate funding to be provided to Stats NZ for the Commercial Accommodation data to be continued.
