“With the IRD receiving approximately 30,000 applications on the first day, it is clear that the Covid Support Payment scheme has been well received. “said Wendy Smith. “It is understood that the majority of the early applications have been received from small businesses with an average application of approximately $4,800 (this was outlined by the IRD in a Facebook live interview held by the Marlborough Chamber.)

The new scheme recently announced by the government has come at a time when many small retail, hospitality and tourism businesses are struggling.  The impact of Omicron and the red framework setting, coupled with a nervousness in our community and a shortage of skilled workers has created the perfect storm.  The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber network has been lobbying government to provide additional financial support for businesses and it is pleasing to see the Government engage and roll out the Covid Support Payment scheme.

Businesses need to compare a 7 day trading period with a previous period as outlined by the IRD and there will be options of the comparative periods either in 2021 or 2022. The Covid Support Payment (CSP) is a payment to help support viable and ongoing businesses or organisations which have experienced a 40% or more drop in revenue as a result of one or more of the following COVID-19 circumstances; including the widespread presence of COVID-19 in the community, the public health legislative measures taken or any business circumstances that are, or are reasonably likely to be, a consequence of the circumstances described above.

“If you have experienced a significant drop in revenue then check the scheme out on the IRD website and see if your business qualifies to access this financial support” said Wendy Smith.  “The payment for eligible businesses is $4000 per business plus $400 per full-time employee, capped at 50 FTEs or $24,000.”

Also remember to SUPPORT LOCAL.  If you are uncomfortable going into a shop or café then support them on line and visit the many businesses featured on the South Canterbury website
