“The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was very disappointed to be advised today that ACC will continue with the proposed job cuts in Timaru” said Wendy Smith.

Advice that 13 permanent payments roles will be disestablished at the end of June 2020 and that those people will have the option of relocating to either Dunedin or Hamilton was notified to the Chamber.

“We have argued that those roles should remain in Timaru and that the government is not fulfilling its obligation on their pre election promises to retain these types of roles in the region” said Wendy Smith.

“These are families that are unable just to pack up and relocate and we believe this decision should be challenged. With our unemployment so low at present, it is likely these employees will be snapped up, however centralisation themes are becoming more evident and are deeply concerning.
