As many businesses battle a shortage of staff a change to the Under and Over Supply lists by MSD and INZ is welcomed.

The new Under and Over Supply Lists announced by MSD and INZ could make a marked difference in being able to source migrant workers to fill vital roles and are a result of collaborative work between the business community and the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and other local agencies.

“A huge thank you goes out to the many South Canterbury businesses who generously contributed to the collaborative evidence provided to achieve this positive result of advocacy undertaken by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce on behalf of our business community” said Wendy Smith.

Plus, a big thank you to Chamber business adviser Raewyn Bell who collected and collated the data and requested the changes for the Mackenzie District. The ability to provide MSD and INZ with hard data about the number of vacancies and the specific roles that were impossible to fill has undoubtedly made a huge difference and influenced this decision.

Although this may not be a 'Silver Bullet' to the staffing shortages, it will certainly assist employers, and is very timely as we welcome Australian visitors and workers.

Effective from 16 April, INZ will use the updated MSD lists to assess Essential Skills work visa applications that are paid below the median wage (currently $25.50 an hour) regardless of the date the application was submitted.

If your roles are not on the under supply list then businesses should contact MSD and provide evidence to have these roles considered for this list.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce will also be hosting a meeting with Immigration NZ and employers on Wednesday 15th May in Timaru in the morning and in Tekapo in the afternoon .
