Tourism spending data for July 2017 released
The latest Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) today show that tourism expenditure grew in most regions over the year to July 2017.
- The regions with the fastest growing tourism spend over the year to July 2017 were West Coast, which increased 15 per cent to $540 million, followed by Tasman (up 13 per cent to $312 million) and Southland (up 10 per cent to $622 million).
- The top three fastest growing international markets were the United States, Germany and Canada, with 28, 25 and 17 per cent annual growth respectively in the year to July 2017.
- Chinese visitor spending was down 6 per cent over the year.
- For visitors from the United Kingdom, spending continued to grow strongly across all regions as a result of the DHL NZ Lions Series. When compared with July 2016, spending in July 2017 from this market was particularly high in Auckland (up 136% to $30.9 million), Otago (up 84% to $13.0 million) and Wellington (up 214% to $10.9 million).
South Canterbury’s annual spend continues to perform at the top end of the rankings in 9th place thanks to the ongoing growth of the Mackenzie District. The Timaru District and Waimate District need to explore and develop a range of strategies to build engagement and synergies with these travellers including geo location options, the traditional visitor guides and collaborative marketing.
Although not capturing all the data the Commercial Accommodation Statistics are another useful benchmark for tourism with Year End June figures for Mackenzie with a 16.4% increase to 782,051 bed nights and the Timaru District continuing to show an ongoing decrease in visitor nights with Year End to June figures at 308,704 bed nights.
